Anyone can sustain a concussion. Aside from concussions that happen in sports, people can suffer severe head injuries in a number of ways.
Concussion causes include:
- Amusement park injuries
- Bicycle accidents
- Product defects
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Playground injuries
Any event that causes a blow or jolt to the head can result in a concussion.
Car Accident Concussions
A vehicle collision can result in a concussion when the impact causes a person’s head to whip back and forth or make contact with a hard surface such as the window or steering wheel.
As concussions do not always involve loss of consciousness, concussion symptoms may not be immediately evident. A person involved in a car or truck accident may have increased physical pain as time passes and the initial shock of the accident wears off.
Amusement Park Concussions
Roller coasters and other amusement park rides are generally considered safe. But when something goes wrong, a person’s head can knock against the ride or whip around too hard and result in a concussion.
Bicycle Accident Concussions
Bicyclists have far less physical protection than drivers on the roadway, so a bicycle accident can easily be fatal or cause serious injury. Bicycle-related concussions are on the rise — U.S. hospital emergency room data shows the number of concussions sustained while biking increased 67 percent between 1997 and 2011.
In addition to the existing dangers to bicyclists on the roadways, there are no bicycle helmet use laws in 29 states in the U.S., according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Only 21 states have bicycle helmet laws, which generally only apply to riders younger than 16. Many bicyclists from across the country ride without head protection and risk concussions as a result.
Concussions Caused by Product Failure
Products such as airbags, seat belts and helmets can fail to do their job during a collision and result in driver or passenger concussions. Sometimes, the failure of specific products can become a national or global problem and lead to massive recalls to prevent more people from being seriously injured.
