Elmiron Lawsuit Attorneys

Elmiron, a pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS), is indicated for relief of interstitial cystitis or chronic bladder pain.  The FDA is currently evaluating the need for regulatory action due to several studies showing a link between Elmiron use and pigmentary maculopathy, which causes significant vision and eye dysfunction. The injuries can range from vision impairment to blindness which are likely irreversible.

What is Elmiron?

Since FDA approval in 1996, Elmiron has been widely prescribed for the treatment of interstitial cystitis which affects millions of individuals across various age groups. In 2018, Emory University published a study showing a possible correlation between Elmiron and pigmentary maculopathy. The presentation of pigmentary maculopathy is very similar to that of macular degeneration and pattern dystrophy. Since then, additional studies including those from Kaiser Permanente and Harvard also found a strong correlation. In fact, a Harvard study noted that even after stopping Elmiron, a patient’s eye damage may continue to progress.

How were the issues with Elmiron discovered?

To date, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Elmiron, has not warned of such side effects. The Interstitial Cystitis Network has petitioned the FDA seeking a change to the warning label.

UPDATE: Retinal Pigmentary Changes have been identified with long-term use of Elmiron. Visual symptoms with this change include difficulty reading, slow adjustment to reduced light environments, and blurred vision.
